Got a Beginning Reader? Check Out This Series!

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Mary Ann Hoberman and Michael Emberley have teamed up once again for the “You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You” series of books. The latest installment in this joint reading venture is Very Short Fables. Others in the series include: Short Stories, Fairy Tales, Mother Goose Tales and Scary Tales.

If you are unfamiliar with this series it is definitely worth a look for beginning readers or just for fun oral reading practice. Stories are broken up  into three colors and columns on each page. Each color represents when a reader reads aloud individually and then when they join together. I used one with a student I was mentoring several years ago and it was a hit! It takes some of the pressure off of the beginning reader to finish an entire page, but more than that it allows an older reader or adult to model reading aloud.

Hoberman is the author of many books for children and Emberley has illustrated quite a few as well. These books are located in the juvenile nonfiction collection.
