The Kids’ Experience Is Next Saturday!

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

In case you haven’t heard, one of the biggest programs the library offers for kids is taking place on Saturday, August 20 from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Kids’ Experience is a day full of short classes on subjects of interest to kids. Families come and spend as much time as they want, moving from class to class or trying some of the other activities. We hope that these introductory classes will give kids enough of a taste of a subject that they will want to explore it more through the materials in the library’s collection. Everything is FREE this day including a hot dog lunch! Classes include: money matters, face painting, balloon sculpting, magic, sign language, watercolors, pencil drawing, storytelling, origami, string stories, juggling, paper rockets, and illustration. Other activities include Miller’s Petting Zoo, music by Jeff Smallwood, and bubbles with the Family Museum. New this year is a visit from the LemonAid car and crew plus readings of a new book by Mike Whalen and Bill Douglas about the car.

Kids’ Experience is sponsored by Quad City Bank and Trust and the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation. Additional partners for this year’s event are the Friends of the Bettendorf Library, Greenspace Associates, Tracy Wachal Naab, State Farm Insurance and Doyle and Keenan, PC. Their support of the event means we can continue to offer everything for FREE! Thanks to all of them for their support!

No registration is required. A complete listing of the class schedule will be posted the week of the event on this website. For more information contact the Youth Services Department at 344-4178.

Got an iPad? Get Kids’ Apps!

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

I have an iPad – I’ve had it for almost a year and am discovering new things everyday. While I have done my share of downloading the Free apps, I also have spent a bit on some that cost a few bucks. In a discussion with the Library Director, he commented that the new job in the world of libraries is going to be an App Librarian. Just like we help you move through the library finding materials, this job would help you get just want you want in the electronic world.  I dare say that I was hit in the face by the fact that he might be right when the February issue of “Kirkus Reviews” arrived on my desk. It is a special issue entitled What’s Happening Right Now in Books. There on the front cover they boast their list of the Top 10 iPad storybook apps. I haven’t tried any of them but will share the list with you along with some others I think look pretty good. I’d love to hear from patrons about apps they have shared with their kids. Feel free to comment!

Kirkus Top Ten Storybook Apps

Popout! The Tale of Peter Rabbit ($3.99)

Teddy’s Day ($3.99)

Alice for the iPad ($8.99)

Cozmo’s Day Off ($3.99)

The Three Little Pigs and the Secrets of a Popup Book ($3.99)

The Little Mermaid and Other Stories by Hans Christian Andersen ($8.99)

Bartleby’s Book of Buttons ($2.99)

The Wrong Side of the Bed 3D ($2.99)

Green Eggs and Ham ($3.99)

Jack and the Beanstalk Children’s Interactive Storybook ($3.99)

More good reviews:

The Magic School Bus: Oceans ($7.99)

Tacky the Penguin ($2.99)

The Little Engine That Could  – The Authorized Version ($6.99)

I will keep my eye out for more good choices – maybe I can transition myself into that new job!

New ebook App for Kids’ Books

Monday, December 20th, 2010

I recently learned of a new application called Tales2Go which brings you storytime, anytime with a subscription app to stream kids’ audio stories to your iphone, ipod touch and iPad. Available through the Apple App store, you can download a 30-day free trial. I was curious, so I downloaded it to my iPad. To my delight, they are offering some pretty popular children’s books from some of the same companies that we purchase from. I listened to one of Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and it was so slick!  If you have one of the compatable devices it will be a great way to get books to your kids at the drop of a hat. Not that I am encouraging you to skip visits to the Library, but I can’t question the convenience. There is a nice selection of titles and age ranges available. I expect that that list will grow pretty fast, too.

Cost for a one-year subscription is only $24.99 which makes it very affordable. Keep in mind that these are audiobooks. With the option of seeing things on your screen, kids might expect more than just the menus to appear. And, while there are other products out there that do this, these are strictly for listening.

Check it out at www.Tale2Go.com!  I will keep you  updated on other apps I discover and please feel free to send me recommendations.

The Kids’ Experience

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

CALLING ALL KIDS! Make plans to visit the Library on Saturday, August 21! It’s our third annual Kids’ Experience – a day full of learning and fun for kids of all ages!  This FREE event includes introductory classes on a wide range of subjects. We love to tie our collection to real life experiences and hope that kids will have their interests piqued enough to explore what the library has to offer. Classes begin at 9:30 a.m. and last for 30-minutes – please note that some are geared for certain age levels and some have limited participation. The last class will begin at 2 p.m. If a class is full – find another and then head back to your first choice – most are offered multiple times throughout the day.  We are adding a new area wioth activities for children five and under called “The Little Hands Site” as well as new classes in Money Matters, Rhythm Boot Camp and an Improv Theater Workshop. A complete schedule of events can be found here

Special thanks to Quad City Bank and Trust and the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation, the sponsors of this year’s event.

More Programming – Don’t Miss it!

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Wow! We have had great attendance at our programs so far which always makes me happy! Last night’s storm put a damper on our storytelling event, but those that did attend heard some great stories from around the world.

Don’t forget there are still plenty of programs to come! This afternoon  is our Thursday Theater at 1:30 showing Flushed Away. Next Wednesday (June 30) our guest will be Gary Liesen, the Snakeman!  When we had Gary two years ago he entertained a crowd of over 400! His snakes are amazing!! Remember – two shows 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. No registration is required!!

Be sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming concert at Trinity. As our sponsor, they always invite us over to their Healing Gardens for a free concert/celebration of reading. This year our guest will be Thaddeus Rex and his “Read Like a Rock Star” program. July 15 at 6:30 p.m. Bring your friends and family as well as a blanket or lawn chairs. The concert will be held at the Library in case of rain.

Summer Reading Program News

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

We are very excited about this year’s summer reading program. People often ask us if we think up the theme, the displays, programs and other activities. The answer is “Yes” and the answer is “No”. The State Library of Iowa participates in a consortium called Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) with over 40 other states. Each library has the option to use the theme chosen by the consortium or go on their own with a theme. Generally, we go with the same theme for our summer program. However, using the theme can mean many different things for many libraries. Through CSLP we can purchase the promotional materials at a much cheaper rate than we could if we were buying them on our own so we generally do that. There is a manual produced by librarians across the country that includes ideas for organization, publicity, programs, displays, handouts and much more. Librarians may choose what they want to use. So, we often use the manual for a starting point. We come up with our own ideas  for programs, reading logs and displays and hope that what we have chosen will be attractive to a wide audience of children and their families. Each year we try to have a different twist on the program and offer a wide variety of programs.

We are very fortunate to have Trinity as our sponsor again this year along with the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation. We have some new partners this year in Monkey Joe’s and Noodles and Company.

The theme for the summer is all about water with “Make a Splash – READ!” as the theme. The program begins on June 1 and will continue through July 31. We will be offering different levels of participation dependant on children’s reading abilities. We have taken on a new outreach program to home daycares this summer with the assistance of the Friends and Bi-State Literacy Council. Because of this new venture, we have decided not to offer our Family of Readers program this summer. If you are looking for good family read alouds – don’t hesitate to ask the staff for suggestions!

We have some really great programs lined up – some familiar faces returning and some brand new entertainers. Check out the Calendar of Events on the website for dates and times.

We hope you will join us for what looks like a SUPER summer. Don’t forget, we also offer summer reading programs for teens and adults!

Books Into Movies

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

In the past several years we have been blessed (or in some cases cursed) by the release of movies that were first released as children’s books. In the past month we’ve seen the release of Alice in Wonderland (Lewis Carroll), Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Jeff Kinney) and How To Train Your Dragon (Cressida Cowell) and just before that Fantastic Mr. Fox (Roald Dahl) and Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (Rick Riordan).

I am thrilled to have the attention drawn to children’s literature and the aftermath of attention that is drawn to the books is awesome! If I had one wish come true it is that I could convince families to read the books BEFORE they see the movies. I love reading the words that help me sculpt the characters in my mind. On the rare occasion when I have seen the movie first it has always colored my mind as to the sights and sounds that have otherwise been part of my imagination. Once I see and hear the actor in the role, it is their face and voice I associate with the character and no longer my own vision. I am seldom disappointed in the book, especially because it is written as the author intended, but am often disappointed in a movie because the producer’s interpretation strays from the original text and the characterization doesn’t meet my expectations.

In this vein, I am thrilled to hear that one of Beverly Cleary’s classics is coming to the screen later this summer. Beezus and Ramona, a cute story about the trials and tribulations of being an older/younger sister is due out July 23. And in December, C. S. Lewis’ Voyage of the Dawn Treader will hit the screen.  I’m giving you fair warning so that you’ll put these on your summer reading lists. Both books are part of a series so you’ll have plenty to keep you reading this summer!
