This Saturday, July 31st is the final day to turn in your reading logs to be guaranteed an award! We will still take logs the following week and will give awards as they are available. New Reader Available for Young Children

July 23rd, 2010

Yesterday I had the most amazing conversation with a mother and her almost 6 year-old daughter. It seems that Kennedy has learned to read and she approached her mother about her desire to read to children that didn’t know how yet. Wanting to seize the opportunity her mother did some work and came to us with the request to allow Kennedy to share her talents here at the Library. YEA! So, Kennedy is going to visit when she can and don a blue “Volunteer Reader” apron. She will read to whom ever will listen. Don’t be afraid to approach her - she is excited about the opportunity.

If you have a child interested in volunteering in this capacity, please contact Miss Tami and we will get things set up. Miss Tami can be reached at 344-4194 or tfinley@bettendorf.org.

Last Week of Summer Reading Program Special Events

July 17th, 2010

We have had a fantastic summer filled with some great programs. If you haven’t had a chance to look at the Photostream on Flickr be sure to take a look (Choose the ”Children’s Programs” drop-down button).

This is our final week of programming and we have three different offerings. On Monday, we have Duck Daze from children in preschool through K ( no older children, please). We had made arrangements to have the Daisy the Duck mascot from the books by Jane Simmons. However, the costume was recalled because of the condition and they determined that it was unfit to continue to circulate. So, we will go ahead with our duck-related games and activities. No registration is required. Meet us in the program room from 10-11 for the fun!

Thursday, July 22 is the final showing of our Thursday Theater. Join us for the showing of Atlantis: The Lost Empire from 1:30-3:00 p.m.

Niabi Zoo will be visiting on Friday, July 23 with some water creatures to round out our summer programs. We will meet in the Bettendorf Room (upstairs) at 2:00 p.m. No registration is required.

We hope that you have enjoyed the programs and the variety of offerings this year. I would love to hear your comments - good and bad! We start planning for next summer (and many programs in between) right away so if you have a program topic or idea jot it down and send it to me. I’ll check it out and see if it will fit into our schedule, funding opportunities and themes.

Thank you to everyone who attend our programs!!

More Programming - Don’t Miss it!

June 24th, 2010

Wow! We have had great attendance at our programs so far which always makes me happy! Last night’s storm put a damper on our storytelling event, but those that did attend heard some great stories from around the world.

Don’t forget there are still plenty of programs to come! This afternoon  is our Thursday Theater at 1:30 showing Flushed Away. Next Wednesday (June 30) our guest will be Gary Liesen, the Snakeman!  When we had Gary two years ago he entertained a crowd of over 400! His snakes are amazing!! Remember - two shows 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. No registration is required!!

Be sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming concert at Trinity. As our sponsor, they always invite us over to their Healing Gardens for a free concert/celebration of reading. This year our guest will be Thaddeus Rex and his “Read Like a Rock Star” program. July 15 at 6:30 p.m. Bring your friends and family as well as a blanket or lawn chairs. The concert will be held at the Library in case of rain.

Shark School

June 13th, 2010

I’ve had some questions about what exactly Shark School is. Think of it as a day in school when all you talk about is sharks! We will cover art, music, science, math, history and geography all in just 45 minutes!

Last January I had been toying with the idea of creating a program I could “take on the road” to other libraries. Not all libraries are as fortunate as we are to have the funding to bring in performers. I wanted to offer something that would be of interest to kids but also be affordable to the libraries. Shark School has fit the bill. I have already provided programs in Altoona, IA and Coal Valley, IL. This summer I will be traveling to Marion, Mt. Pleasant and Tipton, IA and to Moline, Orion, Colona, Lansing, Chicago Ridge and Evergreen Park in IL.

I must tell you that I am NOT a shark expert. But, I knew that I could find all the facts I needed at the Library! So I started studying them and gathering information. I have learned alot - but what I have also learned so far is that KIDS LOVE SHARKS! They know so much that often they tell me the facts before I can get them out.  It has been fun to develop the idea and I am looking forward to meeting new librarians and the kids they serve.

Just a reminder - no registration is required for Shark School and it is open to children K-4th grades. Join us at 3 p.m. in the Junior League Program Room on Tuesday, June 15th.

NEW PROGRAM JUST ADDED!

June 7th, 2010

go-dog-goJoin us on Monday, June 14 at 2 p.m. for a visit from two of the cast members from Circa ’21’s performance of GO, DOG, GO! This classic book by P. D. Eastman is sure to be a crowd pleaser as Circa’s Summer Children’s Musical, June 10-29.  We’ll have a simple craft to go along with the book reading, so plan to join us for some fun!
