Circulation Services
The Bettendorf Public Library Information Center is a member
of Quad-LINC, a cooperative group of
Quad-Cities area public, academic, and special libraries. Your
hometown library card will be honored at any Quad-LINC library.
If you do not live in the Quad-Cities but have a current valid
library card from any Iowa or United States public library,
you can register to use your card here.
For more on getting a library card, see the Registration Policy.
You can avoid lines
at the Check-Out Desk by using our SelfCheck machines. Just
place your card in the area shown and scan the barcodes of your
items. You will get a receipt showing your checked-out items
and the due date.
A convenient feature of the Quad-LINC system is the My Account feature. This password-protected account
enables you to place your own reserves. With an account you
can request that items belonging to other Quad-LINC libraries
be sent here or to another library for you. You can also renew
your own items. These options are also available online via
your home computer. Some items may not be available for
loan or renewal.
With My Account, you can also view your own library record.
You can see what you have checked out; any overdues, fines,
or bills; what items you have on reserve.

Iowa Communications Network Room
The Iowa Communications Network
Room (also known as the Norman Kelinson Meeting Room) may
be used for regular meetings, but its primary purpose is to
serve as a distance learning center connected to the ICN. Staff
also use this room to teach the public about our Quad-LINC computer
catalog, online databases, and the Internet. (For class dates,
check our Calendar of Events).
Call (563) 344-4184 for more information on the ICN Room.
Meeting Rooms
The public may book meeting rooms at the Library up to 12 months
in advance by calling (563) 344-4175. Rooms of varying sizes
are available. See the Meeting Room Policy for a schedule of
fees. Groups may bring
their own refreshments, or arrange for delivery of food and
beverages by the Library's Dewey's Café. All four rooms have projection screens.
For more information, see the Meeting
Room Policy.
The Elizabeth Malmros Conference Room has a capacity
of 24. It is named in memory of Elizabeth R. Malmros, who was
appointed to the first Library Board in 1949 and served through
July 1991, just days before her passing.
The Norman Kelinson Meeting Room has a capacity of 42.
It is named in honor of Norman J. Kelinson, who served for many
years on the Library Board and was president from 1963 - 1997.
This room is also the Iowa Communications Network Room.
The Bettendorf Room has a capacity of 230. It may be
split into two or three smaller rooms. Two rooms hold 100 -
125 and 50 respectively; as three rooms, each holds 75. Folding
walls keep out sound, allowing independent use of all the rooms.
This room has electronic shades to darken it.
When split into three rooms, they are called Bettendorf,
Gilbert, and Lillienthal. Lillienthal was the
original name of the settlement which would become Bettendorf,
though it was never incorporated. In 1858, it became Gilbert
to honor Elias Gilbert, who was instrumental in building the
community. At the turn of the century, brothers William and
Joseph Bettendorf founded a railroad car company here. The employment
made possible by the Bettendorf Company prompted another name
change for the town. In 1903, it was incorporated as the city
of Bettendorf.
Notary Services
The Library provides free notary service during selected hours.
Please call (563) 344-4191 or (563) 344-4179 to verify when
the notary is available.
Photocopiers
The Library has two photocopiers for public use at 15˘ per
copy. Color copies cost 50˘
per copy. The Friends of the Bettendorf Public Library use
the proceeds from the copiers to support Library programs and
services.
Study Rooms
Nine small study rooms are available on a first-come, first-served
basis. Different rooms hold one, two, or four people; one room
accommodates six. The rooms are named for these Iowa authors:
- Bess Streeter Aldrich (1881 – 1954) wrote short stories
and novels about resourceful Midwestern women.
- Alice French (1850 – 1934) was one of America's highest-paid
authors at the turn of the century.
- Susan Keating Glaspell (1882 – 1948) won the Pulitzer
Prize in 1931 for her play Alison's House.
- James Schell Hearst (1900 – 1983), "Iowa's unofficial
poet laureate," wrote about Iowa farmers.
- MacKinlay Kantor (1904 – 1977) won the Pulitzer Prize
in 1955 for his novel Andersonville.
- Cornelia Lynde Meigs (1884 – 1973) won the 1934 Newbery
Award for Invincible Louisa, a children's biography
of Louisa May Alcott.
- Wallace Stegner (1909 – 1993) won the Pulitzer Prize
in 1972 for his novel Angle of Repose.
- Ruth Suckow (1892 – 1960) was one of America's leading
novelists in the early to mid-twentieth century.
