Today was the 13th birthday of a young man who is one of my 8 grandchildren. He is unusually well-read and mature for his age, and he informed me that he had just finished reading "a life-changing book" by Lauren Hillenbrand. The book is titled Unbroken, which I did know has been on the best-seller list.

My granddaughter gave me the book and it lay around the house until I finally "ran out" of things to read. I knew I 'd heard the name Zamperini, but not in many years. Anyway, the book rivals anything by my favorites, Finder or Silva, brings back many memories of WWII. I'd say more, but I've gotta' get back to Sunday reading!

This one's been on my to-read list for some time. I'll have to block out a month so I can make it through the series!

Truly enjoyed reading this review, will try my best to order
it and read it. While living in Minneapolis Ruben and I had the oportunity to visit rhe Boundary Canoe Area, it was
still in its most Wild state. Zillions of Mosquitoes, etc.
But if you could get past the bugs the experience was heavenly. The evenings by the waters were quiet ans softly
lighted, and the sounds of nature reposing were a lovely
memory to keep all these years. And all thanks to a
Davenport Man, this makes it even more special for me, a
Quad Citian by adoption. I have never been able to figure out if the area adopted me or if I chose to be adopted by
the towns. All the same, I am grateful for the espereince.

It has been a few years since I read this book, but when the meatpacking plant was bought by a national company, they immediately cut wages to minimum wage and cut benefits. This meant that many residents needed two work double shits or another job. This is, unfortunately, all too common. Several years ago, Citibank in New York fired its cleaning staff and subcontracted the work. At the time, the cleaning staff had benefits and a livable wage. They went to minimum wage and no benefits. It seems as if far too many companies hurt the workers and rake in excessive benefits and salaries for themselves. The CEO of Viacom got a 149% pay increase in one year and the CEO of Occidental Petroleum got a 142% pay increase. Maybe it's time to cut back on some oil subsidies.
