Alive, Unabashed and Passionate: Extraordinary Women of the Bible
Thursday, June 17, 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m., Bettendorf Room
Dr. Rachel Z. Dulin brings biblical icons to life in a costumed presentation which is empowering and entertaining. Alive, Unabashed and Passionate is meant to be provocative and lead to a greater understanding of the human experience, appealing to both men and women and to adult students of the Bible. Dr. Dulin will be available for questions after the program and will be happy to autograph her books which will be for sale. She was born in Israel, served in the Israeli army, and is now an American citizen. She earned a Master of Arts and PhD in Religious and Theological Studies at Northwestern University and for most of her career was a Professor of Bible and Hebrew Language at the Spertus Institute in Chicago. She has lectured across the country on subjects relating to the Biblical View of Aging, the Status of Women in the Bible, and the Political Voices of the Ancient Near East. For this program, the Library is pleased to be partnering with the Jewish Federation of the Quad-Cities.

So when we decided to try this new program series called Creation Studio, I was thinking we would cover the arts. You know painting, sculpting, etc. But then we thought about it some more and realized we were being too narrow-minded. Who am I to say what is art, anyway? So we expanded it to arts, crafts and hobbies. After all, a finely crafted object, no matter the medium, can be a true expression of art.
So maybe fly tying isn’t your cup of tea, maybe you haven’t considered it as an art form. No matter. Come along to Creation Studio: Fly Tying on June 24 and decide for yourself. The fly that Del Nelson and other members of the Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association will be showing us is a hummingbird fly, like in the picture. It’s a pretty, delicate thing and Del says he knows some women who have made earrings out of them! Now that would be a conversation-starter.
You can also put it in a clear glass ball and make a great ornament for Christmas giving.
Come on, people. Sign up for this free program. Maybe you haven’t thought of fly tying as an art to experiment with, but Creation Studio is all about trying something new. Or maybe I should say tying something new. (Ha! See what I did there? I kill me.)

From Hedy:
This drawing of Dickinson is by my daughter, Kat.
Ever since planting the Emily Dickinson Garden at the Library, we’ve delighted in hosting St. Ambrose University English professor Bea Jacobson who leads a discussion of Dickinson’s poetry twice a year. The discussions are held in May (Dickinson died May 15th) and December (Dickinson was born December 10th). We usually have a theme. This year it’s Death and Dying in commemoration of the 124th anniversary of Dickinson’s death and as a remembrance of Memorial Day later in the month. We’ll start in the Garden, just to bask in its ambience, and then retire to the Program Room where we’ll enjoy ice tea, herb scones, and grapes provided by Dewey’s Cafe.
We’ll read and informally discuss as many of the following poems as we’ve time for: I never lost as much but twice; Safe in their Alabaster Chambers; They dropped like Flakes; I died for Beauty–but was scarce; I heard a Fly buzz–when I died; Because I could not stop for Death; A Death blow is a Life blow to Some; The Bustle in a House; Death is the supple Suitor; Could that sweet Darkness where they dwell; My life closed twice before its close. The texts can be found in compilations of Dickinson’s poetry or on a handout available at the Library in hardcopy. We can also mail or email you a copy if you call us at 344-4179 or email info@bettendorflibrary.com.

Creation Studio
Are you an artist? A handicrafter? A hobbyist? Do you want to be? The Bettendorf Public Library is proud to introduce our new program series for adults, Creation Studio!
Creation Studio is a series of programs at the Bettendorf Public Library geared towards introducing arts, crafts, and hobbies to the community. These workshops, taught by local artists, craftspeople and hobbyists, are intended to give the participants an introduction to an activity in order to let them know if they wish to pursue it. Participants will learn basic skills, sources for training and materials, and approximate start-up costs. Whenever possible, Creation Studio will include hands-on experience.
Creation Studio will debut on February 25 at 6:30 p.m. when Ken Brinson give us a hands-on demo of Pewter Casting. Registration is required and begins on February 1 at 9:00 a.m. Click here to register, or call 563-344-4175.
